What to expect when you start therapy

Starting therapy can feel like a lot, especially if you've never done it before. Here's the whole path, step by step, so nothing comes as a surprise.

1. A free 15-minute call

Book a time and choose a phone or video call. There's nothing to prepare. We'll talk about what's bringing you in and go over how I work, and you can ask me anything. If it feels right, we'll plan a first session. If it doesn't, I'm happy to help you find someone who is a better fit.

2. Paperwork through SimplePractice

I'll send intake paperwork by email through SimplePractice to complete before our first session. After that, your appointments happen through the secure video portal there, and your invoices, reminders, and records are all in one place. If you're using insurance, this is a good time to check your benefits, including your copay, deductible, and any session limits.

3. Your first session

The first session (intake) is a chance to get to know each other. We'll talk about what brought you here, some of your history and the people who shaped you, and what you'd like to be different. You decide how much to share and how fast. There are no wrong answers, and you don't need to arrive with a plan.

4. Finding your pace

Sessions are 50 minutes. Most people meet weekly, at least at first. We decide together what to focus on, and we check in regularly about how it's going. If something isn't working for you, tell me. That's useful information, not a problem.

Getting ready for online sessions

  • Find a private space where you won't be overheard.

  • Headphones help, and a steady internet connection makes things easier.

  • You need to be located in Washington State during each session.

  • For couples and family sessions, everyone who's joining should be in Washington too.

Fees, insurance, and cancellations

Individual sessions are $160, couples and family sessions are $180, and the first session (intake) is $200. I'm in-network with several insurance companies, I can provide a superbill if you're out of network, and a limited number of sliding scale spots are available. Please give at least 24 hours' notice to cancel or reschedule. Full details are on my Fees and insurance page and in the FAQ.

What I don’t offer

I'm not a crisis service, and I don't prescribe medication. I usually respond to messages within one business day. If you are in crisis or need help right away, call or text 988, or call 911.

It’s okay to be picky

The relationship between you and your therapist matters more than any technique, so finding the right fit matters. That's why the first call is free.

No obligation. Come as you are.
